About

This course offers a comprehensive survey of Asian arts, spanning South and Southeast Asia, China, Korea, and Japan from prehistory to the modern era. Through lectures and discussions, students will explore traditional forms such as painting, sculpture, and architecture, as well as distinctive cultural practices including Feng Shui, Ikebana, calligraphy, haiku, bonsai, raku, and martial arts.

In addition to examining the aesthetics and philosophical foundations of these traditions, students will develop a deeper understanding of selected art forms through the visual deconstruction and analysis of individual pieces. Each class will feature a curated set of images, presented alongside key art terms and concepts relevant to the historical period under discussion. Active participation in class discussions about these works is expected.
