Established in 1845, the Copake Iron Works operated until 1903 and, at its peak, served as the area's industrial heart, powering the local economy with its mining and smelting operations and the development of the nearby hamlet of Copake Falls. Today, the site is recognized as one of the most intact examples of a rural 19th-century ironworks in the Northeast. It became part of Taconic State Park in 1926, when New York State acquired the abandoned property.
